Book Dutch Short Stories for Beginners: 20 Captivating Short Stories to Learn Dutch & Grow Your Vocabulary the Fun Way! (Easy Dutch Stories) Review :

Lingo Mastery continues on its important mission – to make Dutch more accessible to a wider population. In the Introductory Note the goal is stated well: ‘Languages are intricately linked to a country’s culture, so in order to really understand a culture’s finer aspects, you need to be able to speak the language well. Besides, from a very practical point of view, it’s indispensible to speak Dutch to be able to apply for the widest possible range of jobs, since many employers in Dutch-speaking countries won’t be able to hire you at al if you don’t speak the language…’Each of the twenty stories follows the pattern Summary of the story, Vocabulary Questions about the story, and Answers. Or as the authors state, ‘Through each story you will learn to understand every aspect of the Dutch language in a fun way: we have created a series of stories that will cover a particular instrument of the language. Each one will tell a different story that will involve well-described characters, with their own personalities and conflicts while ensuring you understand the objective of the particular language tool in Italian. Verbs, pronouns, nouns directions, time and dates; all these will be covered in this book.’The technique is solid and the lessons well taught. The stories vary, as do the lessons taught. This is a very fine introduction to Dutch vocabulary that may arise when you visit the Netherlands or Belgium, appropriate for all age levels. Grady Harp, July 20
I am halfway through rook 3 on Duolingo and was looking for additional materials to read. Reading is a great way to get exposed to natural sentence structure and to expand your vocabulary. I tried news articles, but they were still too difficult. The short stories in this book are a perfect length and more engaging than children’s books. The stories I have read so far also include a lot of dialogue, which give useful examples of practical language use that you can learn. New vocabulary is printed in bold with a word list at the end of the chapter. I have the kindle version, so I can also easily look up any other words I might not know with the free Dutch dictionary download by clicking on the word. I even use that sometimes when I don’t want to scroll to the end. I usually read a story once, then use the word list to learn any new vocabulary, and then go back to read the story once again to see if I can then recognise all the words as used in the text. I then answer the questions at the end of the story. This is a great resource and I would recommend it to anyone trying to further their Dutch.
