This is the second volume of an account of an Englishman's walk across Europe in the early 1930s. The first book took him from Rotterdam into Central Europe. This book takes him the rest of the way to Constantinople. For one thing, its a rollicking fun yarn to read. Written in a very light and adventurous style, it includes fun accounts of the author's walk. But the book is also a very poignant look at a Europe of tradition, culture and low-tech living that no longer exists (and that was destroyed by WWII). If you like this book, I would also recommend Paddling Through Depression-Era Europe by J. Stannard Baker, which involved a trans-European canoe/kayak trip also in the early 1930s. The twentieth-century's most remarkable English-language travel narrative, telling the story of a walk from Hungary to the eastern marches of Europe, this book is a completely absorbing bit of time-travel as well, transporting us back to lost natural and cultural worlds. Fermor's eye for the natural world is as remarkable as is his ability to capture centuries of history. If you like Bruce Chatwin's writing you will love this book, as well as its prequel; but for this reader, this is Fermor's masterpiece, as (amazingly) he writes of a journey undertaken in 1933, but as remembered a lifetime later.
